'Courage to Heal' author to address conference
by Doreen Cudnik
Cleveland-Ellen Bass, co-author of the best-selling book The Courage to Heal: A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse will deliver the closing address at the 19th annual National Coalition Against Sexual Assault conference on Saturday, October 18 at 9:30 am
The conference will be held at the Sheraton Cleveland City Center, beginning on Wednesday, October 15. Bass's lecture is free to the public and is being hosted by the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, which, according to its director Mary Brigid, is the "only agency in Cuyahoga County offering comprehensive
services to survivors of rape and sexual assault."
Bass is also the co-author of the book Free Your Mind: The Book for Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Youth and Their Allies. This has been described as an invaluable guide to empower gay youth and help them understand, accept and celebrate themselves. It emphasizes making healthy choices about relationships and sex, and encourages gay youth to come out "when they're ready." To reserve a seat for Bass's speech, call the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center at 216619-6194.
Other events at the conference will include sessions on rape within the lesbian

On the edge, in a hospice
Cleveland-How often is it that we get to witness an actor truly practice his craft? On a simple set with minimal props and relatively no costume changes, Beachwood native Lester Shane does just that in Cleveland Public
Lester Shane
Theatre's pro-
duction of 'Shane's Mortal Coil: Voices from the Hospice. The play is part of the theater's "Back to the Edge" season of premieres.
Shane acts with abandon, smoothly making the transition from one character to the next, transcending gender, age, and ethnicity. One moment, he's 75-year-old Pasquale Annunziata, a lonely Italian man suffering from heart disease, the next he's 22-year-old Charlene Watson, whose partner Conchita Ruiz is dying from complications of AIDS.
In his series of compelling monologues, Shane portrays patients, caregivers and staff during this single evening in a hospice unit. It was his own work as a hospice volunteer that inspired Mortal Coil.

"Hospice is not about dying. It is very much about being alive in the face of death," Shane said. "Confronting mortality is the ultimate experience of life, and nowhere is that more profoundly revealed than at a hospice."
Shane's play was recently performed at the 1997 New York International Fringe Festival and has been chosen for off-Broadway production in New York City.
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to produce Lester Shane's play," said Cleveland Public Theater artistic director James Levin. "It's incredible to put up a show just before it goes off-Broadway."
There are only five more opportunities to see this cutting-edge performance; October 11 at 10 pm; October 12 at 2 pm; October 23 and 24 at 8 pm; and October 25 at 10 pm. Call the theater at 216-631-2727 for more information or reservations.
Call for film extras
Huron-If you've always believed you had that "star quality," your chance to be discovered may be just around the corner. Edge of Seventeen, a film written and directed by Ohio native Todd Stephens, is Stephens own story of coming of age while working a summer job at Cedar Point amusement park. The film will be shot entirely on location in Sandusky and Huron, and stars Lea DeLaria, Kenneth Garner, and Chris Lee Stafford as Stephens.
"The people of Sandusky, Huron, Vermilion and Cleveland have already contributed so much to this production's success and we're looking to the [gay and lesbian] community to help supply many of the small roles and extras," said casting director Richard Whobrey.
Several scenes (about five days worth of shooting) will be taking place at local bars.
"We'd love to include the real patrons of these establishments in our film. We're looking for men and women, over the age of 18, who'd like to be extras," Whobrey said.
The scenes will be shot during the first two weeks of November. Anyone who is interested should leave a message at 419-433-7989.
Insight is having a ball
